Not Punch related but....

Postby Nick Jackson » 20 Apr 2012, 19:04

.... we have some rather large puppets here in Liverpool this weekend.
There's the diver who rose out of the Mersey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJMVvNoR1Ms and is in search of his niece.
The little girl is in the north end of the city: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKiRssW0YHM
with her dog: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOEsHERCzgg
I suppose these are marionettes – although with little emphasis on the "ette" bit!

Chris I'm sure there's room in car park in front of the harlequin for a crane.

Someone sent me this link today.
Also it's not Punch or even puppets, but a couple of steps away - automata.

Looks like a great place to visit. Having spent the last few days stumbling about making a monkey automaton I am particularly impressed. All those wires bent in so precise a way. It is amazing how so much fiddling can produce an illusion of elegance.
Also hasn't video on the web become of age.

Well yes - but surely this fails to demonstrate it. The automaton piece was more slide show than video? I would have liked a bit of video. Surely when discussing moving figures the best way is not still pictures with a voice describing the movement.
Don't get me wrong, I am aware that this is a BBC series where a story is delivered in a series of pictures, I am just surprised that this particular presentation should be chosen to accompany the observation that video on the web had come of age.

For a start we are regularly posting videos to illustrate these days. And secondly the quality and size of the video are very good as one would expect from the bbc. The content and style of that video in making that observation being inconsequential.
