Will you have enough room?

Postby Chris » 24 Nov 2012, 12:53

The lady on the telephone was giving me directions:

Image

"It's quite a large house, set back from the road.
There are big iron gates but they are set at angle from the road so you can easily miss them."

Image

"Go right up the drive to the house, you will cross a couple of cattle grids."

The room I performed in was so big that even a grand piano looked relatively small. Huge book cases stuffed with books reached to the ornate painted plaster-work ceiling and there were pictures on the walls, twenty or more, life-size ancestoral portraits in elaborate gold frames. As she showed me in the lady said: "Will you have enough room?"
It's good to squawk!

Performing for the quality now are we?
I do hope you had the good manners to enter by the servants entrance as befits your station in life.
It has been my experience that I am always true from my point of view, and am often wrong from the point of view of my honest critics. I know that we are both right from our respective points of view. - Gandhi (Having a bob each way.)

Actually it's nothing new Chris. I first performed for Royalty in 1961.

I do hope you had the good manners to enter by the servants entrance as befits your station in life.

Oh dear me no. This is Britain not the Colonies.

In the Marquis of Anglesey's pad.
This is actually a smaller room than the one
described above.

Syrely any audience discerning enough to enjoy Punch and Judy is a quality one! (although the level of quality may be variable)

Whilst CVDC was taking the proverbial he does raise an interesting point.

It's an unusual situation being invited into someone's house as an entertainer, there is a large element of trust. I've done shows for one particular family so many times they've left the door on the latch and told me to let myself in.
