Not sure if this helps but I know first hand that the earliest extant Codman "crocodile" looks much more like a dragon – rather like the Mouth of Hell in the medieval mystery plays. In the 1980s I met Joe (?) Green at Rhyl and he showed me his croc which, he said, was the only surviving member of his grandfather's cast. It was a similar shape, and with similar detail, to the Codman croc – except Joe* had painted it turquoise and created the body from fur fabric in the same colour.

* Am querying the name as I always get the Greens mixed up.
