An Appeal from St Paul's Church, Covent Garden

Postby Chris » 03 Aug 2013, 11:11

We all know of the annual Punch & Judy event in St Paul's Church Gardens, Covent Garden, which celebrates Mr Punch's arrival in Britain as recorded by Samuel Pepys. Indeed most of us will have attended at one time or another. St Paul's is also known, the world over, as the Actors' Church. Simon Grigg, the Rector, writes:
"Last year St. Paul's launched an appeal to save its gardens, which are currently subject to serious subsidence.

"The appeal was launched by the glorious Barbara Windsor MBE amidst much media interest. The appeal has raised some £40,000, which is commendable in these hard times.

"However the bill for repairs comes to £100,000, and we must act now if the gardens are to be saved. Any contribution, however small, would really help us, and would be permanently recorded in the restored part of the garden, which will be renamed the Diamond Jubilee Garden in honour of HM The Queen. The restored part of the garden will also feature a childrens' maze, a considerable improvement to the public realm in the heart of the West End.

"If you are able to help, or wish to find out more information, please contact me on or on 020 7836 5221.
Simon Grigg

Chris adds: On a purely Punch-selfish note, where else could we find such an appropriate, convenient and delightful venue in the very heart of London? We must preserve these gardens.
It's good to squawk!
