Roselia

For those that haven't spotted them already here are the links to two rather interesting videos from CvdC:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nMXK9VbliQE

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KrlNomkRVmk

The puppets are from the famed Roselia troupe (excluding the Kent Punch and Clarke Baby). These wonderful early puppets were later owned by Waldo Lanchester and then exhibited at the Polka Theatre. I think they're probably the most interesting figures I've seen so far.

The videos give an idea of how the puppets move and work rather than polished show sequences.

Not only interesting but curious. They were worked the opposite way around. Why? And also how?

I know you can work glove puppets on opposite hands - I have done it occasionally - but it's not comfortable, not when they are cut and sewn to fit the other way round. Even more interesting is that unless i wasn't looking properly, they were not obviously being worn the wrong way - they look like they were made to fit that way. Why I wonder?

The film wasn't reversed was it?

Perhaps it's just too early in the morning. I was late back and didn't fancy bed after a very late dinner. I'll look again later in the morning.

Actually it is no great mystery Tony. Chris vdC when filming neglected to apply the Northern Hemisphere correction to his camera, a very easy mistake to make which only becomes apparent on projection.

Incidentally before these were owned by Waldo Lanchester I believe they were in the hands of Percy Press the first - or am I confusing that with the fit-up?

I'm not that daft. If that was the case they would have been upside down not back to front! I mean left to right!! You've got me at it now!!!

Seriously though - why the reverse of normal? Were the figures dressed the other way around for some reason?

In the cold light of day the Wal Kent Punch looked as if it was intended for the right hand. Baby doesn't matter. But the dresses of the others didn't look as if they were reversed.

Chris was right. The film has been reversed.

Still, I would have thought they would be more interesting even on the wrong hands than the technology that filmed them.

Surely not. It's not film at all. It's digital. There's nothing to reverse.

Well the digital image has been reversed then. We can all be picky!

Speaking of 'picky' ....at last year's Huddersfield Extravaganza, when filming, (OK videoing) my second show, the cameraperson Trish spotted a young girl in the audience having a good 'pick'. A classic picking session.
She documented it very well. It would be perfect for 'You've been framed' etc, but I think that Martin vdG realises that the poor young kid would be scarred for life if it was made public.
As if I haven't got enough to do today, with all I've got to do today.

Oh do buck up James, don't you know anything? As Tony says, "it's digital. There's nothing to reverse"
Below is a picture of nothing, reversed.

Thank you Chris. I am delighted with that.

If there was one thing I've always thought would be better than one of me, it would be two of me. Don't I look absolutely wonderful?

Now I can be the centre of the entire universe and both the sun and moon and the whole of the rest of the world can revolve around me.

And look. Two identical Mr Punches too. Doesn't he look quite splendid. A lifetime ambition achieved.

Thank you so much.

P.S. I may have to consider selling one of my hats, if not even both. For some reason the one I have just tried on has suddenly become exceedingly tight. Far too small.

The rain this weekend must have shrunk it, don't you think?

I suspect it might be seen when I was showing. I might have to crouch below the playboard.

Perhaps I would be better sticking to what I've got - but the twins are lovely. I'm such a good looking fellow, aren't I?.

And so modest, too.
