Can anyone recommend the best plans of aluminuim frame?

Postby Thompson28 » 18 Dec 2015, 14:58

Hello everyone.
Firstly, I would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
I am planning to build a aluminium booth.
Can anyone recommend any plans or advise in constructing the fit up?

The legend Bob Wade had one many years ago, however I can't remember how it was constructed.
Could anyone help me please?
Thanks,
Mark.

Have you read "The Frame File" by John Alexander?

Aluminium frames are normally built using some variation of the lazy tongs design but with metal substituting the wood. Aluminium, in my experience, produces an inferior fit-up when compared to wood. The reason it is chosen is that it is thought to be lighter than wood and this is not usually the case. Even if it is lighter it is not sufficiently so to counteract its disadvantages - the main one being that it is vulnerable to bending. For example an aluminium booth is not good in wind where the fit-up can suffer quite a bit of twisting. Or if an ali booth blows overthen it is more vulnerable to damage and strain than wood, and more difficult to repair.

But I won't talk you out of it, most of us have to discover these things ourselves. So consult the Frame File and have fun.

Or if you'd prefer to buy one then have a word with Ian Davis of Magitrix, he's made several and has his own design.
