That kind of fits with what I meant about the "piece of tree", in that he told me he wasn't spending as much time carving figures now. He was finding bits of branches etc which had interesting features (like a small branch stub for a nose) and using those features.
He suggested the kids in the audience did this too.
It's a beauty, isn't it? Topless (as you'll have guessed), with slits and openings all over the place for both him and the puppets to pop in and out of. He also has bits and pieces, musical instruments etc hanging off it.
He performed part of the show in Commedia dell Arte style, with mask and costume.
